Mama Mia

Over Christmas Break my Mom gave this to me. I am in love with it. She got it at a Garage Sale in Boston when I was a baby and it has hung in her house ever since. It is a reminder of what is really important to me as a mom, and of what an amazing mother I have. Sam said his Mom has this exact same cross stitch. I don't know if it is a really popular cross stitch of the 70's or if it is just another example of the Hirt/Nelson phenomenon. If you are not familiar with this phenom, here are some examples.

10 kids: 5 girls/5 boys
Oldest half: 4 girls and a boy
Youngest half: 4 boys and a girl
Both families have an Annie, Katherine, and Sam.
The Katherine and Sam are in the same birth order, 5th and 6th.
The 3rd boy/7th Child in both families have the middle name David. (my 3rd boy
now has the middle name David.)
The 5th Girl/9th Child both have the middle name Elizabeth.
My Dad and Brother's name is James/Sam and His Dad's Middle names are James.

I am pretty sure Sam and I were MTB!

I love this post. That poem/needle point is one of my most favorite things. It was on the wall in my parents' room for as long as I can remember. And yes, you and Sam are most definitely a perfect match. Crazy weird all the similarities... sure do love you guys!!

I love that poem, I want a copy of it. Hmmm, sounds like a good craft idea for this coming week.

I remember making the poem into a song that I'd sing to babies as I'd put them to sleep in mom's room. :o) I think mom gave it to Katie because it comes from a poem titled "The Fifth Child" if I remember correctly. Such a sweet embroidery too!

You were totally meant for each other!!

Song for a Fifth Child

by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

It was given to mom by Connie Bohanon when I was born because, as the favorite, I am the fifth child. Mom gave it to me because I have the 5th grandchild (Dominic). I had it re-framed and it looks amazing. I love love love love love love it.

I too remember singing Joe to sleep in mom and dads bed making up a tune to the poem. I also remember pretending to be reciting it in front of a crowd because of how well I remembered it. ha!

What a good find. Now you just need 5 kids.....lol

other similarities: don't forget that both Jim Nelson and Mike Hirt look like they could be David Elbert's (Holly's dad) brother!

Oh My Gosh!
Seriously Sooo Blessed!

I think my mom got this when Sam or Nephi was born. I think Connie Bohanan made it for her. I remember it quite well.
